What If It Works?

Toddler Hats

On the lookout for great toddler hats? This page gives an overview of some things to take into account, plus a few personal recommendations of mine, being a toddler mum twice over!

The first thing to remember is you might have a fight on your hands when it comes to getting any headgear onto any child
aged 1 -3! Some toddlers are positively allergic to any kind of hat.

In spite of this, headgear is important either in summer or winter.

In winter, a cold head means misery - but toddlers being toddlers, they don't usually understand the reason for their hatless discomfort. And if they are aged under two years old, it's hard to explain to your little cherub that the answer to their problems is the one things they are dead set against!

So...what do you do?

Here are some suggestions: try a hat with flaps that you can button up so removal is impossible, or try a coat with a furry hood, or limiting the time your child is outdoors if at all possible.

In summer, a sunhat is essential to protect against the sun's harmful rays, but you don't generally have the option of attaching the headgear to your child's head.

It's worth noting that the best sunhat of all is shade - don't think that a hat and suncream will provide all the protection your toddler's delicate skin needs. So being in the shade does remove the need for a hat.

This won't solve all your problems, of course.

By far the best way to deal with the hats-on, hats-off defiance where they just take off the hat the minute you put it on, is to show them what will happen immediately they take the hat off.

When I have done this it generally involves taking my kids inside, or to a place they are not overly fond of. You could also remove a favourite toy. Do this straight away and your kid will get the message that taking the hat off = something unpleasant.

Don't get angry or show any exasperation when it comes to problems with toddler hats- or you may unwittingly fall into the attention seeking trap.
