Toddler Discipline:

Don't Make This Mistake...

For some people, the words 'toddler discipline' don't belong together.

'Discipline' makes us think of a strict school teacher frightening her pupils into submission.

Toddlerhood can seem like a logic-free zone where the rules aren't hard to learn - because there aren't any.

Both of these ideas are wrong. A parent or carer who uses toddler discipline properly:

Knows that prevention is better than cure.
Understands that not all problem behaviour is intentional.
Knows when to be gentle and when to be firm.
Doesn't need to smack, spank or yell at their toddler.

Too Good To Be True?

Does all this sound like some sort of sickeningly perfect parent?

The perfect parent doesn't exist. Everybody has their faults - we all make mistakes doing this, the hardest and most important job in the world.

Trying to use proper toddler discipline as much as we can means that when we lose our temper (as all parents do at one time or another), the incidents are isolated rather than the norm.
