Car Boot Sales & Yard Sales

tracey island The great thing about eBay is that it has removed the unfair stigma that second hand goods used to have - which is great for reducing waste as well as expenditure.

There are some brilliant bargains to be had closer to home.

I got the Micromachines car track pictured at the top of the page for a mere £3 ($6 US), and this Thunderbirds Tracey Island model for £1.50 at local car boot sales. My toddler continues to have hours of fun with both of them.

Second-hand items might have some parts missing. The micromachines track had no toy cars when we bought it. Solution? eBay (12 vehicles for £2).



Timing

The January sales are often the best time of year to find cheap toddler toys. Unfortunately, they happen just at the one time of year when everybody is getting over Christmas - financially and physically.

However, if you are organised, you can save lots of money by toy shopping at this time - even buying all or most of your presents at this time.

This strategy works best when present buying for toddlers younger than your own, as you will have a better idea of what they will enjoy 6 months down the line. I find it impossible to predict what my eldest will like to play with by next summer.



Homemade Toys

There are lots of homemade toddler toys you can make for your little one.

What about a simple tower of used boxes? Stack them up until they topple.

String some brightly painted toilet rolls together for a funky snake.

Money Saving Ideas For Birthday Presents:

The vasy majority of toddler birthday presents are toys. Here are some gift-giving tips to save money but still make a child's day:

Buy a few small toys Toddlers love opening presents, and are immune to caring about their value. A number of little toys, individually wrapped, are very exciting for a young child. Have a look at the page on party bags for some suggestions about very cheap toddler toys.

Make the birthday card instead of buy it, and put the money saved towards the present. You can buy blank card kits that work out at less than 10p (20 cents) a card, with matching envelope.

Club together with one or more others to buy a gift. If you organise this, it stops you being pressured into overspending because you decide what the present is, based on what you can afford.
